Garage Door Sensor Repair — Saskatoon

Door won't close? Reverses unexpectedly? Sensor light blinking or off? Nine times out of ten this is a sensor alignment, dirt, or low-sun issue — not a failed sensor. Most companies will quote you a full sensor replacement (and charge $250+) when a 15-minute alignment would have fixed it. We diagnose for free and fix the actual problem.

Why Garage Door Sensors Fail in Saskatoon

Five common causes — most of them not the sensor's fault.

1. Low winter sun angle false-trips.Saskatoon sits at roughly 52°N latitude, which means in November, December, January, and February the sun sits very low on the southern horizon for most of the day. If your garage faces south or east-south-east, that low-angle sun can hit your photo-eye sensors at exactly the wrong angle and trick them into reading an obstruction. The door reverses or won't close. It's not a sensor problem — it's a geometry problem, and the fix is repositioning or shielding the sensor.

2. Snow, ice, and frost accumulation on the lens.Every time you open the door in winter, snow falls off the bottom panel and lands on the floor right where the sensors are mounted. Frost builds up on the lens overnight. Dust and dried road salt accumulate. The sensor is technically working — it just can't see through the gunk. A wipe with a microfiber cloth clears 60% of winter sensor calls.

3. Cold-weather wire shrinkage. Sensor wires run from the opener to each sensor at the bottom of the tracks. In deep cold, the wires shrink slightly and old, brittle insulation can crack at the staples or splice points, breaking the circuit. The fix is re-running the wire or replacing a damaged section.

4. Misalignment from being bumped.Sensors sit at ankle height. They get bumped by feet, snow shovels, kids' bikes, recycling bins. A 5° tilt is enough to break the sender-to-receiver beam alignment. We see this constantly. Fix is a 5-minute realignment.

5. Actual sensor failure.Eventually the LED bulb in the sender or the photodiode in the receiver does fail. That's a real replacement job — but it's the last thing we check, not the first. Most local companies start here because the markup is bigger.

What You Can Try Before Calling Us

We'll happily take your money, but it's worth trying these first.

  • Wipe both sensor lenses with a clean microfiber cloth (no Windex, no abrasives)
  • Check that both sensor lights are on and steady — one should be green/red on the sender, the other on the receiver
  • Look for visible misalignment — both sensors should point straight at each other
  • Clear any snow, leaves, or debris from the immediate sensor area
  • Check whether the issue happens at the same time of day (low-sun cause) — if so, it's a winter geometry problem we can fix permanently
  • Test the manual lock-out button on the wall control — sometimes someone enables it accidentally

Tried all of those and the door still won't close? Call us. We'll diagnose for free and fix it the same day.

Frequently Asked Questions — Sensor Repair Saskatoon

Almost always a sensor problem. Either the sender and receiver are misaligned, the lens is dirty or frosted, low winter sun is hitting the sensor at the wrong angle, or there's actual debris in the path. Less commonly, the close-force setting on the opener is too sensitive. We diagnose for free and fix the actual cause.

Three Saskatoon-specific reasons: (1) the low winter sun angle hits sensors that are fine the rest of the year, (2) snow and frost build up on the lenses, and (3) cold-shrunk wiring breaks at brittle insulation points. If your sensors only fail in winter, it's rarely the sensor itself — it's the environment around it.

Please don't. The sensors are a safety reverse system required by federal regulation since 1993 — they prevent the door from closing on a child, pet, or vehicle. Disconnecting them is dangerous and illegal. We can fix the actual problem same-day.

No. Diagnosis is free. A lot of Saskatoon competitors charge $80-$150 just to come look at the sensors. We don't. You pay for parts and labour if you accept the repair — nothing for the diagnosis.

Most sensor calls are 15-45 minutes start to finish. Alignment and cleaning is 15-30 minutes. Full sensor replacement is 30-60 minutes depending on wire condition. We complete most jobs in a single same-day visit.

If your opener is pre-1993, it doesn't have safety sensors at all (and is technically illegal to operate). If it's 1993-2005 and the proprietary sensors aren't available, we can usually splice in universal-fit replacements. If neither works, opener replacement is the only safe path.

Employees. Every Saskatoon technician is hired, trained, and insured by us directly. No commission-based subcontractors with an incentive to upsell you on a full replacement when a $120 alignment would do.
